Awaou Baco connects with SMEs in Alibori and Borgou

The Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises and Employment Promotion, Awaou Baco, spent two days in late July engaging directly with entrepreneurs, artisans, and local stakeholders in Benin’s Alibori and Borgou departments. The visit aimed to assess support programs for youth, women, and people with disabilities, while fostering dialogue on economic opportunities in the region.

Engaging local entrepreneurs in Malanville and Nikki

The first day of the tour began in Alibori with a meeting with Prefect Ahmed Bello Ky-Sama, followed by visits to small businesses, garages, and rabbit breeders in Malanville. In Nikki, the minister toured the vocational training center, discussing skill development and job placement prospects with instructors and trainees.

A working session in Kandi brought young entrepreneurs together to explore public programs supporting training, employment, and entrepreneurship. The discussions highlighted the importance of structured support for youth-led initiatives in the region.

AZOLI program supports youth and persons with disabilities

The following day in Borgou, the minister met with over 50 AZOLI program beneficiaries—young trainees from northern Benin—at the Amaldi Prestige Hotel. The focus was on their training progress and post-program integration opportunities.

A parallel initiative trained 46 people with disabilities in leatherworking and shoemaking, aiming to enhance their professional skills and economic independence. The government’s commitment to inclusive development was underscored during these exchanges.

Strengthening SMEs with public support

The tour also included a visit to ASAFMA, a metalworking SME producing machinery for the agro-food sector. The company benefits from assistance by the Benin SME Development Agency, the Entrepreneurship Support Project, and the Chamber of Crafts and Artisan Crafts of Benin.

Digital platforms streamline access to public programs

At Delika’s Tissage, a traditional textile workshop, the minister emphasized the role of digital tools like SICA (anacronym for *Système d’Information et de Coordination des Activités*) and e-PME in helping entrepreneurs navigate public support systems. These platforms provide guidance on financing, business formalization, and professional integration.

The minister urged project leaders to remain committed to their ventures, reaffirming the government’s dedication to reforms and investments that empower youth and women in Benin’s economy.
