Opposition leader Joshua Osih demands immediate election schedule adherence in Cameroon

During a July 23 press conference, Joshua Osih, leader of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), called on Cameroon’s government to strictly adhere to the electoral calendar. The opposition figurehead emphasized that the electoral schedule belongs to the Cameroonian people, not the ruling administration, and urged all opposition parties to unite in a common front to enforce this democratic principle.

«Elections must proceed without further delay. Not a single day should be postponed. The electoral calendar is not the government’s property—it belongs to the people. I urge all opposition groups to form a united front on this critical demand,» Osih declared. His appeal, however, has yet to elicit any public response from other opposition leaders.

The timing of Osih’s statement follows recent controversies surrounding municipal and legislative elections, which were postponed despite a government-backed bill passing in parliament and a presidential decree taking effect in June 2026. This extension has effectively prolonged the current mandate until February 2027.

Government cites financial, logistical, and security challenges as reasons for delays

The administration has justified the postponements by citing financial constraints, logistical hurdles, security concerns, and the need to realign the electoral calendar. While these factors have been presented as unavoidable, critics argue that such delays undermine democratic processes and public trust in electoral institutions.
