Diplomatic milestone: A new chapter in Benin-Canada relations

After 64 years of diplomatic ties, Canada has inaugurated its first full-service embassy in Cotonou, Benin. The landmark ceremony took place on August 5, 2026, led by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honorable Anita Anand, during her official visit to Benin. The event was attended by Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Corinne Amori Brunet, diplomatic corps representatives, and key government officials including Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Minister Delegate for External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management.

This historic move underscores the deepening friendship between Benin and Canada, as well as their shared commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation. The presence of a permanent diplomatic mission in Cotonou will enhance political dialogue, streamline the monitoring of mutual commitments, and foster collaboration in critical areas such as economy, innovation, security, and human development.

« Canada is fully committed to working alongside Benin, and today, we are injecting fresh momentum into this partnership, » declared Anita Anand. Her counterpart, Benin’s Foreign Minister Corinne Amori Brunet, emphasized the embassy’s role in deepening ties. « Our cooperation is expanding, diversifying, and investing more in the economy, innovation, security, and human development—values that resonate deeply in both Benin and Canada, » she stated.

Strengthening political and economic bonds

Earlier that morning, Honorable Anita Anand and Corinne Amori Brunet signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political and diplomatic consultations. The agreement establishes a structured framework for ongoing dialogue, ensuring regular follow-ups on bilateral commitments and coordinated efforts on regional and global issues.

A broader working session followed, bringing together Benin’s Minister of Tourism and Foreign Trade, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari (also overseeing Industry and Private Investment Promotion), Minister Delegate for National Defense Gildas Agonkan, and Hugues Oscar Lokossou. Discussions focused on identifying new avenues for collaboration to drive economic growth, enhance security, and promote sustainable development in Benin.
