The Chadian government has forcefully rejected accusations from the United Nations Human Rights Office regarding civilian casualties during military strikes in the Lake Chad Basin targeting Boko Haram positions.

In a press briefing held in N’Djamena, the Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, Gassim Chérif Mahamat, dismissed the allegations as “attempts to discredit the Chadian army”, arguing that such claims undermine the credibility and dignity of the national armed forces.

He emphasized that Chad’s military remains deeply committed to combating terrorism across the Sahel and the broader Lake Chad region—a zone plagued by years of relentless attacks from armed groups.

The government maintains that military operations are conducted with strict adherence to international humanitarian law. It asserts that all necessary precautions are taken to minimize collateral damage and protect civilian lives during airstrikes targeting Boko Haram strongholds.

This rebuttal follows a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office suggesting significant civilian losses from aerial operations carried out by Chadian forces in the region. The document has reignited debates over the conduct of military operations in this volatile area, where clashes between security forces and armed factions remain frequent.

N’Djamena strongly disputes these findings, contending that they lack sufficient substantiation. Authorities counter that the defense and security forces continue to play a pivotal role in stabilizing the region, standing at the forefront against terrorist threats.

The government urges a “balanced and responsible” assessment of the security situation and reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding civilian populations. It also advocates for enhanced international cooperation to better coordinate efforts against extremist groups active in the Lake Chad Basin.

Amid diplomatic tensions, Chadian authorities reassert their determination to persist in operations against Boko Haram while defending the legitimacy and professionalism of their armed forces in an exceptionally challenging security landscape.
