Chelsea Football Club has dodged a severe penalty after an independent appeals panel overturned a six-point deduction for financial breaches. The Premier League club instead received a suspended transfer ban and a substantial fine for historic irregularities uncovered during a 2022 ownership transition.

The Football Association (FA) identified rule violations spanning 2009 to 2022—predominantly between 2010 and 2016 under former owner Roman Abramovitch. New leadership discovered these compliance failures after acquiring the club in 2022. Last September, the FA formally lodged 74 separate charges against Chelsea.

Financial records reveal Chelsea paid £47 million (€54.5 million) to unregistered intermediaries and third parties between 2011 and 2018. Transfer deals involving star players were among those flagged, including Eden Hazard’s 2012 arrival from Lille, Samuel Eto’o’s 2013 signing from Anzhi Makhachkala, Willian’s 2013 move, André Schürrle’s 2013 transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, Nemanja Matic’s 2014 acquisition from Benfica, and David Luiz’s 2016 purchase from Paris Saint-Germain.
