Nantes vs Toulouse match abandoned after supporter pitch invasion
Sunday night’s highly anticipated Ligue 1 encounter between Nantes and Toulouse at the Stade de la Beaujoire was abandoned shortly after kick-off, following a chaotic pitch invasion by home supporters. The match, originally scheduled as the final fixture of the 2025-26 season, was halted in the 22nd minute when spectators breached the pitch, launching flares and other objects onto the playing surface.
match officially abandoned after emergency meeting
The decision to abandon the match was confirmed in a joint press conference held shortly after 22:00. Present were Olivier Chovaux, delegate of the French Football League (LFP), Stéphanie Frappart, the match referee, the Loire-Atlantique prefect, and representatives from both clubs. The gathering followed an urgent crisis meeting to assess security conditions.
Speaking to the media, Chovaux stated: « We witnessed a clear breach of ground safety protocols, marked by the invasion of the pitch by supporters accompanied by pyrotechnic devices and the throwing of objects. This forced officials and both teams back to the dressing rooms. » He added: « The prefect has made the definitive decision to halt the match for security reasons. »
Frappart, who was officiating her final match of the season, confirmed the abandonment nearly 40 minutes after the initial interruption. Her announcement was met with cheers from Nantes ultras. The stadium was subsequently evacuated following further flare launches.
nantes coach confronted by invading supporters
The match had been suspended with the score level at 0-0. After the pitch invasion, referee Stéphanie Frappart ordered players from both sides to return to the dressing rooms. However, retrieving the teams proved challenging. Vahid Halilhodzic, coach of Nantes, remained on the pitch edge, confronting the approaching supporters before being restrained by security personnel. Only after several minutes were the spectators cleared from the terraces, secured by a significant CRS presence.
Nantes, currently 17th in the Ligue 1 table, will face relegation to Ligue 2 next season.
sports minister condemns violent scenes
Reacting to the incidents, French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari issued a strong condemnation: « The violent scenes that occurred minutes ago during the Nantes vs Toulouse match are completely unacceptable and have no place in sport or our Republic. I condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms and offer my full support to the players and all fans who attended to enjoy the game peacefully. The prefect’s decision to abandon the match was necessary. Such behavior cannot be tolerated. »
Ferrari continued: « I commend the rapid response of stewards and law enforcement. Every effort must be made to identify those responsible for these acts of violence, who will face severe penalties. »
