French football league match halted after Nantes fans storm pitch
Frustrated by their team’s inevitable relegation, Nantes supporters invaded the pitch during Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash against Toulouse.
With twenty minutes played in the final 34th matchday fixture between FC Nantes and Toulouse, the game was abruptly halted when supporters stormed the Stade de la Beaujoire’s pitch. Nantes, already confirmed as relegated to Ligue 2, and Toulouse, finishing 10th with nothing left to play for, were deadlocked at 0-0 when the incident unfolded.
Dozens of individuals dressed in black, some wearing club-colored hoods, breached stadium security from the Tribune Loire, carrying smoke flares onto the pitch. This forced both teams to immediately retreat to the locker rooms.
The confrontation escalated when FC Nantes manager Vahid Halilhodzic attempted to confront the pitch invaders but was restrained by a member of his coaching staff. The coach’s visible outrage was later captured on camera during a post-match interview.
While most of the intruders returned to the stands, the match remained suspended. Broadcasters covering the fixture reported that a crisis meeting involving Ligue 1 authorities and public officials was underway to determine the game’s eventual outcome.
