Morocco disrupts border crossing plot targeting Ceuta ahead of August 15
The Moroccan Ministry of Interior has confirmed the arrest of key figures behind a planned mass border crossing to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, scheduled for August 15. Authorities also condemned online campaigns inciting such actions and urged Spain to expedite the repatriation of unaccompanied minors.
Moroccan authorities have activated robust security measures along the borders with Ceuta and Melilla to prevent any illegal crossings into the Spanish enclaves. This follows recent social media posts and anonymous messages circulating online, calling for a coordinated mass crossing attempt on August 15.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Rachid El Khalfi confirmed in a press briefing that security forces have already detained several individuals suspected of organizing and inciting these actions. Those arrested are currently undergoing legal proceedings under the supervision of the competent judiciary. The ministry emphasized that such calls pose serious risks to human life and constitute criminal offenses under Moroccan law, warning that both participants and organizers of these campaigns will face legal consequences.
Ongoing border security operations
The Ministry of Interior has reiterated that security operations are not limited to a specific timeline but represent a permanent, high-alert security posture along the Ceuta and Melilla borders. These measures are continuously adapted based on evolving security assessments and identified threats. Authorities have called on the public to remain vigilant and avoid sharing or responding to suspicious or misleading calls that could endanger lives. They stressed that combating irregular migration remains a top priority, strictly within the bounds of the law.
Spain urged to accelerate minor repatriation
The official statement underscored that addressing irregular migration and human trafficking requires a shared responsibility framework, with neither country bearing the burden alone.
In this context, Morocco has directly appealed to Spanish authorities to fulfill their obligations under existing bilateral agreements and expedite the repatriation of unaccompanied Moroccan minors currently in Ceuta. The Ministry urged Madrid to resolve administrative and judicial hurdles delaying their return, ensuring the best interests of the children remain paramount. Authorities also highlighted the effectiveness of the immediate return mechanism, which has proven successful in previous border interventions.
Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public order and safety while ensuring strict adherence to legal frameworks. The country pledged to continue its vigilant monitoring and coordination efforts to address any emerging threats at the border.
