Cameroon – After nearly two months out of the public eye, Cameroonian authorities have broken their silence. The government confirms President Paul Biya remains alive and is set to return soon, amid growing speculation over his health and whereabouts.
Government response amid health rumors
The Cameroonian government addressed concerns for the first time regarding President Paul Biya’s prolonged absence from public life, which began on June 7. The announcement came as rumors swirled about his condition, prompting the Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, René Emmanuel Sadi, to speak on August 2. Speaking to national audiences, he sought to dispel doubts about a potential power vacuum.
« The Constitutional Council has not declared a vacancy of power at the head of the state. President Paul Biya is alive. He has not resigned, » Sadi stated, firmly rejecting claims of any leadership crisis. His remarks targeted both domestic and international scrutiny, particularly from opposition figures who have long demanded recognition of a vacancy due to the president’s extended absence.
Unanswered questions linger
While the government confirmed Biya’s return is imminent, specifics about his current location or exact timeline remain unclear. « I cannot tell you exactly when President Paul Biya will return. Even if I knew, it wouldn’t be my place to announce it here. What I can say is that he will be back very soon, » Sadi told national media.
At 93 years old, Paul Biya has led Cameroon since 1982, making him the world’s longest-serving current head of state. His June departure from Yaoundé was officially described as a « short private stay in Europe » alongside his wife, Chantal Biya. Since then, no public appearances have been recorded—a first since he assumed office.
Official decrees fuel speculation
Despite his absence, the presidency continues to issue official decrees bearing Yaoundé as the signing location. On July 22, multiple signed documents were made public, sparking fresh debate online. Some questioned their authenticity, further deepening concerns about Biya’s health and whereabouts.
