In a decisive move to bolster its airspace presence and assert national sovereignty, Senegal has officially welcomed a new Boeing 737-800 into its national fleet. The aircraft, christened “Gorée,” was received in Dakar on 7 September 2026, marking a critical milestone in the country’s strategic efforts to establish itself as a dominant aviation hub in West Africa.
State-backed expansion for economic and political sovereignty
This major acquisition was made possible through direct financial support from the Senegalese government, coordinated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transports under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Implemented under the strategic vision of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the arrival of the new aircraft represents the nation’s commitment to building a robust aviation sector capable of supporting its grand economic, tourism, and diplomatic ambitions.
Anatomy of the new Boeing 737-800
The newly acquired aircraft belongs to the highly versatile Boeing 737 NG family, engineered for short- and medium-haul routes. This addition will provide much-needed operational capacity to expand the national carrier’s regional network. The cabin is arranged in a dual-class configuration, offering a total of 174 seats: 12 in Business Class and 162 in Economy Class, all outfitted with ergonomic Recaro seats. Physically, the aircraft measures 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and features three galleys and three lavatories to ensure passenger comfort during regional transits.

Naming the aircraft “Gorée” carries deep historical and geopolitical resonance. Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands as a global symbol of the transatlantic slave trade, human resilience, and reconciliation. By choosing this name, the airline intends to send a “flying ambassador” across the African continent and beyond, bridging the historical memory of the nation with its modern global outlook and its global diaspora.
