Dakar, Sénégal — During a campaign stop in Louga on Saturday, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the ruling party Pastef Les Patriotes, directly called on President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to prioritize the scheduling of upcoming local elections. The call came as Sonko engaged with a packed crowd of supporters during a nationwide tour to promote his party’s membership drives.
The former presidential candidate underscored the president’s authority to issue decrees, noting that the same process should apply to setting the election date. « Issuing a decree to dismiss officials like Fadilou Keïta or Waly Diouf Bodiang falls within his powers, and no one disputes that. But just as easily, a decree must be issued to establish the election date. These are all straightforward decrees, » Sonko told the enthusiastic audience.
Demands for swift action on local elections
For weeks, Sonko has been vocal against any postponement of the local polls. In Louga, he suggested that the delay in announcing the election date might stem from the president’s apprehension about the current momentum of his party. « The president appears concerned about the energy and mobilization of the patriots, » Sonko remarked, drawing applause from the crowd.
Political stakes and public expectations
The absence of a confirmed election date has fueled speculation and raised concerns among political observers. Sonko’s intervention highlights growing pressure on the administration to clarify the timeline for the polls. As the ruling party strengthens its grassroots presence, the call for transparency in the electoral process intensifies, reflecting broader public expectations for democratic accountability.
