Political tensions in Sénégal have intensified as speculation grows over a potential dissolution of the National Assembly. During a recent gathering of the Pastef party in Linguère, opposition leader Ousmane Sonko made his stance clear, issuing a stern warning to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
Sonko asserted that if the government proceeds with dissolving the Assembly and calling snap legislative elections, the ruling party would face a crushing defeat. He framed the move as a strategic miscalculation that would backfire against the administration.
Electoral prospects under scrutiny
« If they proceed with local elections, we will defeat them. If they dissolve the Assembly, it will be even worse for them — and that’s exactly what we want. We will trounce them overwhelmingly, » Sonko declared, leaving little room for ambiguity in his prediction.
The opposition leader went further, suggesting that a potential electoral loss could politically destabilize the president, potentially leading to an early exit from office before the 2029 mandate concludes.
« I even fear he may throw in the towel before 2029, » Sonko added, reinforcing his message with a tone of certainty.
Call for restraint among supporters
Beyond electoral strategy, Sonko urged his supporters to remain composed and avoid falling into traps set by opponents. He cautioned that provocations were being orchestrated to incite reactions that could justify crackdowns on Pastef.
« I urge everyone to stay vigilant and calm. They are actively seeking ways to provoke Pastef so that our youth react, giving them an excuse to dissolve the party and revoke its registration, » he cautioned.
Sonko emphasized that by maintaining discipline and avoiding provocations, his party could secure a dominant position in upcoming elections, which he described as « a walk in the park. »
