Touba, 30 July 2026 — As the Grand Magal of Touba approaches on Sunday, 2 August 2026, Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, paid a courtesy visit to the holy city. He was received by Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, the General Khalif of the Mouride Brotherhood, in an atmosphere steeped in reverence and spirituality.
During the meeting, Mr Sonko extended his deepest respects to the religious leader and reaffirmed his admiration for the Grand Magal’s spiritual and historical significance. He highlighted the event’s role in commemorating the exile of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the founder of the Mouride tradition, and its enduring values of faith, perseverance, work and peace.
The assembly president praised the spiritual legacy that continues to inspire millions of followers across Senegal and beyond, while underscoring Touba’s vital role as both a religious and social hub that fosters national unity and stability.
In response, Serigne Mountakha Mbacké renewed his call for peace, national unity and social cohesion. Amidst ongoing challenges, he urged Senegalese people to remain united around solidarity and brotherhood.
He also offered prayers for Mr Sonko and the entire Senegalese nation, wishing the country enduring peace, prosperity and stability.
