A dream start to European competition. Mjällby, fresh from clinching the Swedish title in 2026, delivered a statement performance against Lincoln Red Imps. The 7,000-capacity Strandvallen erupted as the home side raced to a 3-0 lead before halftime, completely outclassing their Gibraltarian visitors in the second round qualifier’s opening fixture.

A first-half masterclass

The Scandinavians struck early and often, with Faroese sensation Aki Samuelsen opening his account twice in the opening 26 minutes (18′, 24′). Swedish striker Jacob Bergström doubled the advantage before the half-hour mark (31′), putting the tie firmly in Mjällby’s control. Though Samuelsen had a golden opportunity to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, he saw his attempt saved, and the second period saw no further goals.

The road to the next round

Mjällby now faces a daunting trip to Gibraltar next Tuesday (18:00 CET) in the second leg, where a victory would secure their place in the third qualifying round. The winners of this tie will then await the victor from the Iberia 1999 (Georgia) vs Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia) clash, after the Slovakian side prevailed 2-0 away in their first leg.

The second qualifying round draw also featured heavyweights like Fenerbahçe, Thun, Dinamo Zagreb, Hearts, Red Star Belgrade, and Kairat Almaty, making Mjällby’s achievement all the more remarkable for a club of their stature.
