Taiwan has announced a temporary halt to visa processing for Moroccan citizens, citing reciprocity as the driving force behind the decision. This move comes in direct response to Morocco’s reported suspension of visa applications for Taiwanese nationals worldwide, a policy shift that has disrupted bilateral travel and exchanges.
According to Taiwan’s foreign ministry, Moroccan embassies and consulates globally have ceased issuing visa confirmation letters to Taiwanese travelers. The change was communicated to Taiwanese travel agencies through the Moroccan embassy in Japan, casting uncertainty over international travel plans between the two regions.
In retaliation, Taiwan’s government has implemented an immediate freeze on visa applications from Moroccan citizens, with exceptions only for those holding special permits. The foreign ministry emphasized its expectation that Morocco would reinstate practical travel arrangements and stressed that the policy would be closely monitored before any further actions are considered.
It is important to note that Morocco upholds the ‘One China’ principle, which means it does not formally recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. Consequently, the two governments maintain no official diplomatic ties, despite the cultural and economic exchanges between their peoples.
