Trump’s clear stance on Western Sahara sovereignty
In a message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day, Donald Trump made a decisive declaration: “The United States unequivocally recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and fully supports the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the only viable, credible, and realistic basis for a lasting solution.”
Celebrating 250 years of American-Moroccan friendship, the U.S. president emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations, rooted in mutual trust and respect. He praised the enduring partnership, noting that “this milestone year marks not just a celebration of history but a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to progress.”
Ending the Western Sahara dispute
Addressing the long-standing territorial issue, Trump conveyed a firm message to the Moroccan leader: “Any alternative path only perpetuates the status quo, which is unacceptable. This dispute must be resolved now, and the United States will continue to drive meaningful advancements toward that end.”
The U.S. president also highlighted Morocco’s pivotal role in regional stability, describing the country’s leadership as “a cornerstone of peace and security.” He commended Morocco’s unwavering efforts in combating extremism and safeguarding shared interests, particularly through its involvement in the Abraham Accords. Additionally, Trump underscored the importance of Sahel security as a joint priority for both nations.
Economic and technological collaboration
On economic ties, Trump praised Morocco’s Vision for Growth, calling it a catalyst for prosperity for both peoples. He announced that “my administration has directed our teams to prioritize economic and social development initiatives with Morocco, including within Western Sahara.”
The message also outlined future cooperation in strategic sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense. Trump assured King Mohammed VI that “American technology and innovation will remain steadfast partners for Morocco’s next 250 years.”
Concluding his address, the U.S. president expressed optimism for a new era of collaboration, stating: “Together, we will build a future that places the interests of our two peoples at the forefront.”
