Usa reaffirms backing for Morocco’s sovereignty over western Sahara in historic message

US President Donald Trump's message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco

During the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day on July 30, King Mohammed VI received a historic message from US President Donald Trump. In the communication, Trump underscored Washington’s unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, while endorsing Rabat’s autonomy initiative as the sole viable path to resolve the long-standing territorial dispute.

Washington’s stance remains unequivocal: «The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and backs the Moroccan autonomy proposal as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a just and lasting solution,» Trump stated in his message.

He warned that any alternative approaches would only perpetuate the existing stalemate, calling the status quo «unacceptable.» «This dispute must conclude now,» Trump declared. «The United States will continue driving progress toward this goal,» he added.

In a broader message of congratulations to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Trump reflected on the two and a half centuries of deep-rooted American-Moroccan friendship. He described the bond as «built on trust and mutual respect,» highlighting the partnership’s historical depth.

The US President praised King Mohammed VI’s «wise leadership,» portraying him as a «pillar of stability» in the region. He also emphasized Morocco’s «steadfast commitment» to fostering peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding regional security—efforts that include its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords. «This enduring partnership is invaluable to the United States,» Trump noted, adding that both nations would collaborate to enhance security across the Sahel.

On the economic front, Trump directed his administration to prioritize joint initiatives with Morocco, including in Western Sahara. Key sectors identified for collaboration include technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense—all areas critical to both nations’ future growth.

«Together, we will forge a new era,» Trump concluded, urging a relationship centered on mutual prosperity and shared interests.
