WAPCO (Niger) expands community health initiatives and livestock support

WAPCO (Niger), in partnership with local livestock authorities, recently completed a successful cattle vaccination and deworming campaign across the Zinder region. This vital initiative reached seven pastoral settlements, including N’Guel Eléfi and Tesker, providing essential care for over 10,000 animals. This milestone signifies the successful conclusion of the initial phase of WAPCO (Niger)’s “Healthy Communities” public interest activities, which have now extended to every area along the pipeline’s route.

To further enhance the health management capabilities of local populations, WAPCO (Niger) proactively incorporated its internal medical resources. Leveraging on-site medical staff and fundamental medicines, the company conducted two pilot projects for free community medical consultations near pumping stations 5 and 6 in early 2025. These pilots were met with enthusiastic approval from local residents. Building on this successful trial, the program then undertook a broader needs assessment and officially commenced the first phase of the “Healthy Communities” initiative in August 2025. To date, WAPCO (Niger) has facilitated a total of seven free community medical consultations, delivering vital healthcare services to 1,249 local inhabitants, and has generously provided a tricycle ambulance to a local community health center.

During the implementation of these complimentary consultations, the company’s team recognized that livestock represents a critical income source and livelihood for many local families, with herders expressing an urgent need for animal care. Responding directly to these community concerns, WAPCO (Niger) expanded the scope of its “Healthy Communities” activities. Collaborating with local livestock authorities and other organizations, WAPCO (Niger) delivered vaccination and deworming services to over 20,000 animals across three significant pastoral gathering points situated along the pipeline, thereby assisting herders in safeguarding their essential productive assets.

From its inception, WAPCO (Niger) has upheld a corporate philosophy rooted in mutual benefit and shared development, acting as a responsible enterprise. While ensuring the secure and consistent operation of the pipeline, the company places significant emphasis on fulfilling its social responsibilities. WAPCO (Niger) continuously champions the Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP), makes public interest donations, and extends aid to communities. This commitment actively contributes to enhancing local livelihoods and fostering social progress, consistently strengthening the population’s “sense of gain” and cultivating an external environment conducive to the pipeline’s safe operation.

Looking ahead, WAPCO (Niger) is committed to further refining its community needs assessments to precisely address the expectations of populations residing near the pipeline. The company plans to consistently broaden the scope of its public interest activities, ensuring that more residents can partake in the benefits of development. While upholding the safe and seamless operation of this vital energy artery, WAPCO (Niger) will continue to collaborate closely with the community, implementing tangible measures to enhance livelihoods and promote mutual growth and shared development for both WAPCO (Niger) and the local populace.
