The Borussia Dortmund leadership appears to be finalizing a strategic exit for Brazilian right-back Yan Couto this summer, with a surprising twist in the off-season transfer saga.
The German club has reportedly reached a preliminary understanding with Italy’s Serie A side Como 1907, potentially paving the way for Couto’s temporary relocation to Lombardy. While an outright sale has been ruled out, discussions now center on a loan agreement with a future purchase option attached, adding flexibility to both parties involved.
This isn’t the first time Dortmund has explored Couto’s future. In 2024, the club initially secured the player on loan from Manchester City, simultaneously including a straightforward buy clause. By the summer of 2025, Dortmund activated this obligation multiple times, investing a total of €25 million to make the deal permanent—despite inconsistent performances during his debut season, where he frequently found himself on the bench.
Como emerges as the favored destination for the Brazilian defender
Couto’s playing time remained scarce in the following campaign, with head coach Niko Kovac rarely featuring him. Between mid-March and mid-May of the past season, the 24-year-old managed just twelve minutes on the pitch over two months, raising questions about his long-term role at Dortmund.
Como, which had initially cooled its interest in Couto earlier this month, now appears to be reconsidering its position. Reports earlier in July suggested the club was shifting focus toward alternative right-back options, but recent developments indicate a renewed confidence in the Brazilian’s abilities. Como’s head coach, Cesc Fàbregas, who guided the team to a fourth-place finish in Serie A last season, may see Couto as a viable solution to fortify the squad ahead of their Champions League campaign.
With Couto’s contract at Dortmund running until 2030, the potential loan move offers a chance for the player to regain form and visibility while allowing the German club to optimize its squad depth.
