The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has sparked significant debate by choosing Jean-Jacques Ndala to officiate the first leg of the Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and AS FAR. The Congolese official, who was at the center of the controversial CAN 2025 final, is now facing formal opposition from the Maroc-based club.
AS FAR submits formal protest to CAF
According to reports, the Rabat-based club has officially voiced its concerns to CAF. In a formal letter, AS FAR highlighted several issues regarding the officiating for the match scheduled for May 17 in Pretoria. The club pointed out an imbalance in the refereeing panels, noting that the first leg features a less diverse group of officials compared to the return match in Rabat on May 24. Furthermore, they noted that Ndala was notably absent from the list of African referees selected for the 2026 World Cup.
The shadow of the CAN 2025 final
The primary grievance revolves around Ndala‘s recent track record, specifically his management of the CAN 2025 final. AS FAR claims the referee failed to properly apply tournament regulations during that match. This specific incident previously led to a ruling where Maroc was awarded a victory by forfeit, a decision currently being challenged by Sénégal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAS). This new appointment has created a difficult situation for CAF, especially as reports suggest that Mamelodi Sundowns may also be dissatisfied with the selection of Jean-Jacques Ndala.
