Bénin 2060: national education council prioritizes science and vocational training

From August 5 to 7, 2026, the National Education Council (CNE) will convene its third consultative assembly in Cotonou. The event will focus on strengthening scientific, technological, and vocational education as key drivers for Benin’s future development. Government officials, academic leaders, institutional representatives, technical and financial partners, and civil society will gather to shape the country’s educational priorities.

Driving Benin’s future through education and innovation

Held at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Cotonou, the three-day assembly aligns with Benin’s ambition to position education, research, and vocational training at the heart of its industrialization and digital transformation agenda. Discussions will center on strategies to guide learners toward high-demand fields in science, technology, and professional skills, ensuring the workforce meets future economic needs.

The event brings together CNE members, government delegates, university leaders, public and private institutions, as well as civil society organizations. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, the gathering aims to inform evidence-based policy decisions in the education sector, ensuring alignment with national development goals.

The executive secretary of the CNE, Clément Chabi, emphasized the council’s role as a national platform for educational stakeholders. He highlighted the critical link between sustainable development, prosperity, and technological sovereignty, all of which hinge on investing in youth, research, and human capital quality.

Shaping the education agenda for Benin 2060

Noël Ahonangnon Gbaguidi, President of the National Education Council, outlined the institution’s mandate, including defining national educational guidelines, coordinating the system, and monitoring public policy implementation. Comprising 69 members from public and private sectors, the council will review activity reports and financial accounts before issuing recommendations to enhance the national education system.

Over three days, participants will assess the progress of recommendations from previous sessions while exploring ways to improve teaching quality and bridge educational priorities with the Bénin 2060 vision. The CNE views the strengthening of scientific, technological, and vocational pathways as essential to fostering innovation, supporting digital transformation, and accelerating industrial growth.

While the assembly’s outcomes will guide future actions, specific implementation measures for the new recommendations remain under discussion.
