Benin boosts emergency healthcare with 600 new oxygen concentrators

The medical landscape in Benin is experiencing a significant transformation. On April 16, 2026, the Minister of Health, Professor Benjamin Hounkpatin, formally accepted a shipment of 600 cutting-edge oxygen concentrators. This initiative is designed to drastically improve the emergency response capabilities of 23 healthcare facilities across the nation.

Advanced equipment to preserve lives

Procured by UNICEF with financial backing from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, this equipment represents a capital investment exceeding 205,450 USD (approximately 116 million FCFA). These “10LPM single flow” concentrators provide a reliable and continuous supply of oxygen, which is essential for patients suffering from acute respiratory failure.

The strategic distribution of these units will focus on hospitals and clinics located in the following departments:

  • Alibori
  • Littoral
  • Atacora
  • Borgou
  • Donga
  • Couffo
  • Atlantique

A major step in reducing maternal and infant mortality

According to Minister Benjamin Hounkpatin, this delivery is more than just a logistical update; it is a core component of a national strategy to decrease maternal, neonatal, and pediatric death rates. “The availability of medical oxygen is a matter of life and death,” the Minister noted during the ceremony. He further emphasized that these tools represent a firm commitment to providing every citizen with fair access to high-standard medical services, regardless of their location.

Strengthening international health cooperation

The handover event featured key figures, including His Excellency Wei Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador, and Ousmane Niang, the Resident Representative of UNICEF. The Ambassador praised the robust diplomatic ties between China and Benin, confirming Beijing’s ongoing dedication to supporting the local health sector.

The UNICEF representative highlighted that these devices, funded by individual donors in China, will significantly bolster the resilience of Benin’s health infrastructure when facing life-threatening emergencies. This upgrade to the technical capacity of medical centers aligns with government efforts to modernize the national health platform and provide more effective public services.
