Bénin constitutional court reviews presidential election lessons

The Constitutional Court of Benin concluded a five-day seminar in Agoué on Friday, July 17, evaluating the presidential election held on April 12, 2026. During this intensive review, justices examined the entire electoral process to highlight strengths, challenges, and areas for improvement ahead of future elections.

The closing ceremony was led by Vice-President Nicolas Assogba, standing in for President Dorothé Sossa, who was unable to attend. Assogba praised the quality of the discussions and confirmed that the seminar’s objectives had been fully achieved. He emphasized the importance of evaluating practices to enhance institutional performance, quoting management expert Peter Drucker: “What cannot be measured cannot be improved.”

Key recommendations for future elections

The seminar participants developed several recommendations aimed at strengthening electoral procedures and reinforcing the Constitutional Court’s jurisprudence. Vice-President Assogba announced the formation of a dedicated committee to analyze the seminar’s findings and ensure their implementation.

Once approved by the Court’s General Assembly, these recommendations will be incorporated into a new electoral procedures manual. This manual will serve as a reference document for upcoming elections, ensuring greater transparency and legal certainty in the process.
