Historic initiative launched in Yopougon to honor women’s contributions
The Ivorian Women in Politics (FIP) organization inaugurated the first-ever National Women Builders of the Nation Week on July 30, 2026, at Yopougon Town Hall. This event, running from August 1 to 4, coincides with Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th Independence Day celebrations, highlighting the pivotal role of women in the nation’s political, economic, social, and cultural development.
Reflecting on achievements and future challenges
The week-long program, themed “66 Years of Ivorian Independence: What gains for women and what future prospects?”, aims to assess progress made since 1960 while identifying persistent obstacles. FIP President Rebecca Yao emphasized the importance of this reflection: “We recognized the need to evaluate women’s accomplishments since independence, pinpoint challenges, and propose actionable solutions to policymakers.”
Intellectual and cultural highlights
From August 1 to 3, Yopougon Town Hall will host a national symposium featuring an opening panel and sixteen thematic discussions. Topics include female leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth development, and women’s rights. An accompanying exhibition will showcase pioneering women’s journeys and successful female entrepreneurship initiatives.
The symposium’s outcomes will culminate in a White Paper submitted to relevant authorities for implementation of recommendations.
A gala to honor 66 trailblazers
The week concludes on August 4 with a gala dinner at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 women will be recognized for their foundational contributions to Côte d’Ivoire’s development since 1960. FIP’s Rebecca Yao announced plans to make this an annual event, stating: “Each year, we’ll revisit previous resolutions to track progress and drive continuous improvement.”
Local and national support
Yopougon’s Deputy Mayor Mireille Bamba praised the initiative, which has garnered backing from Mayor Adama Bictogo. Organizers envision this becoming an annual platform for dialogue, reflection, and celebration of women’s vital role in nation-building.
