Gabon clears 51 billion FCFA in domestic debt to boost private sector

As Gabon gears up to celebrate its 66th Independence Day, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has unveiled a bold financial initiative: the release of 51 billion FCFA to settle outstanding debts owed to local businesses. This strategic move aims to bolster small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) while revitalizing the private sector’s momentum.

Gabon’s government is accelerating efforts to clear its internal debt, with President Oligui Nguema confirming the payment of 51 billion FCFA to settle business claims. This announcement marks a significant step toward economic stabilization and private enterprise growth.

The allocated funds are divided strategically—30 billion FCFA is earmarked for companies in the mining and forestry sectors, while the remaining 21 billion FCFA targets other businesses, with a strong focus on supporting SMEs and mid-sized industries. This targeted allocation underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic resilience across key sectors.

The decision follows a high-level meeting between the Head of State and representatives from the Federation of Gabonese Enterprises, alongside leaders of SMEs and mid-sized businesses. Held at the Palais de la Rénovation in Libreville, the discussions centered on the challenges facing the private sector, job preservation, and measures to sustain economic activity.

For the initial phase, the Treasury will mobilize 21 billion FCFA to honor 1,478 payment orders issued between 2022 and 2026. These orders cover critical industries such as construction, maintenance, food supply, and fuel distribution—sectors vital to the nation’s economic fabric.

The government’s move is designed to strengthen business cash flows, sustain operations, and safeguard employment. This payment initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce the country’s domestic debt, which currently stands at approximately 4,652 billion FCFA.

By addressing these arrears, authorities aim to improve the operational environment for private enterprises and inject momentum into Gabon’s economic recovery. The release of 51 billion FCFA represents a pivotal first step in this long-term plan to support national businesses and reinforce economic stability.
