Influential imam mohamad ishaq kindo arrested in Ouagadougou

Mohamad Ishaq Kindo

A tense situation unfolded in Ouagadougou on Tuesday, May 26, as Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, a prominent Sunni imam and influential religious figure, was detained by security forces in broad daylight. The arrest, which occurred just two days before the Eid al-Adha celebration, has sparked widespread reactions across the Muslim community in Burkina Faso.

Security forces intervene amid growing tensions

Witnesses described the operation as violent and abrupt. According to a close associate present during the arrest, security personnel—including masked police and military officers—raided the area around 2:00 PM local time. The intervention prompted resistance from nearby worshippers, leading to clashes and several injuries among the faithful.

The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso (FAIB) issued a statement shortly after the incident, confirming the arrest but noting that no official reasons for the detention had been provided. The organization stated it had initiated formal inquiries with relevant authorities to obtain clarity and ensure a fair resolution.

Religious freedoms bill fuels controversy

The detention comes shortly after the imam publicly criticized the newly adopted bill on religious freedoms, passed by the government on March 19. In a widely circulated video message, Kindo condemned the legislation, warning authorities to “reconsider the consequences of their actions” before restricting religious practices.

He went further, declaring, “Let everyone beware of attempting to ban prayers in public spaces. Whether you are a leader or a powerful figure, you possess neither the strength nor the authority of God.”

Community protests erupt in Ouagadougou

Within hours of the arrest, hundreds of Muslims gathered in central Ouagadougou to demand Kindo’s release. Authorities responded by dispersing the demonstration using tear gas, adding to the already charged atmosphere. The FAIB urged calm, calling on the community to remain peaceful and composed during this uncertain time.

No official statement from the burkinabe government

As of now, the Burkinabe authorities have not released any public statement regarding the imam’s detention. The silence from government circles contrasts sharply with the public’s growing concerns and the visibly rising tensions within religious communities.

President Ibrahim Traoré, in a social media post following Eid prayers, praised the security forces for their ongoing fight against jihadist groups and warned against any attempts to destabilize the nation. He cautioned that those who undermine national stability would face “full responsibility and consequences.” However, no mention was made of the detained religious leader.

New religious freedoms law: balancing security and faith

The controversial bill, adopted in March, aims to regulate religious practices in Burkina Faso to curb online radicalization, hate speech, and violent extremism. Mariem Sanogo, Director General of Religious, Customary, and Traditional Affairs, explained that the updated legislation responds to rising threats of radicalization and online intolerance.

The law prohibits the construction of places of worship within public institutions, with limited exceptions for health facilities, prisons, and military barracks. Authorities clarified that public prayers remain permitted, provided they respect the beliefs of others and maintain public order.

Since the military takeover in 2022, Burkina Faso has been governed by a transitional regime under Captain Ibrahim Traoré. The government has intensified efforts to combat jihadist insurgencies that have destabilized large parts of the country, justifying its stringent measures as essential for national security.
