The Inter Milan have completed the signing of versatile right-back Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur, finalizing a €35 million transfer that marks the club’s latest strategic move in Serie A. The deal solidifies their defensive depth following the high-profile departure of Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid.
Long-term commitment for Spence at San Siro
At 26 years old, Spence has inked a five-year contract at the San Siro, extending his stay in Italy through June 2031. After successfully passing his medical examinations with both the club and Italy’s National Olympic Committee (CONI), the England international agreed to a base annual salary of €2.5 million, supplemented by performance-based incentives. The transfer fee includes an immediate payment of €31.5 million to Tottenham, with an additional €3.5 million tied to contractual performance milestones.
Serie A reunion for Spence
This move brings Spence back to Italy, where he previously impressed during a six-month loan spell with Genoa in the 2024 season. His adaptability and tactical awareness during that stint convinced Inter’s leadership that he could thrive under the demanding system overseen by assistant coach Cristian Chivu. Spence’s ability to excel as both a right and left wing-back adds valuable tactical flexibility to the team’s defensive options.
The defender’s stock skyrocketed following his standout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. As a key figure in England’s campaign, Spence featured in all eight matches, including the semifinal against Argentina and the third-place playoff victory over France, further cementing his reputation as a world-class talent.
Tottenham move draws to a close
Spence leaves the Premier League side after 85 appearances, a journey that began in July 2022 following his £19 million transfer from Middlesbrough. His exit coincides with Tottenham’s own defensive reinforcements, notably the acquisition of experienced left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer. Robertson’s arrival adds depth and leadership to the squad, particularly on the left flank.
Nerazzurri bolster English contingent
With Spence’s signing, Inter now boast two English internationals in their ranks this summer, following the free transfer arrival of defender John Stones from Manchester City. The club is set to kick off its Serie A campaign with a home fixture against Monza on August 22, as they look to build on a summer of ambitious recruitment.
