With the FIFA World Cup just around the corner, all eyes are on the Senegal national team and their captain, Kalidou Koulibaly. The veteran defender, currently playing for Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, has been sidelined due to a persistent thigh injury for several weeks, leaving fans and teammates anxious about his readiness for the tournament.
At 34 years old and with 102 international caps, Koulibaly is a cornerstone of the Lions of Teranga. Yet, since his last appearance for Al-Hilal on April 8, he has been unable to take the field. The injury occurred during a training session, and despite undergoing treatment in Spain, the timeline for his recovery remains uncertain. With only six weeks left before the World Cup begins, the clock is ticking for the Senegalese captain.
Al-Hilal remains tight-lipped on Koulibaly’s return
Simone Inzaghi, the head coach of Al-Hilal, has adopted a cautious approach when addressing Koulibaly’s condition. During a recent press conference, he acknowledged the severity of the injury, stating, « We have two injured players, Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom is back and ready, but Koulibaly suffered a thigh contusion that led to a hematoma. We are monitoring his progress daily, and his return will depend on how he responds to treatment in the coming days. »
The club has confirmed that Koulibaly has been undergoing a structured rehabilitation program at the Meena Clinic, based at the club’s headquarters. Additional treatment sessions were deemed necessary after medical examinations in Spain revealed the extent of the damage to the anterior thigh muscle. Despite this, Al-Hilal has not provided a clear return date, leaving many to wonder if Koulibaly will feature in the remaining six league matches before the World Cup.
His absence has already been felt, as he missed key fixtures, including the African Cup of Nations final and international friendlies in March against Peru (0-2) and Gambia (1-3). With Senegal set to face France, Norway, and Iraq in Group I, the pressure mounts on Koulibaly to regain full fitness in time for the global showpiece.
