In a bold diplomatic gesture, Morocco has immortalized Donald Trump’s name on a monumental infrastructure project, linking southern regions to the contested Western Sahara.
The Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, stretching 1,055 kilometers—the longest roadway in Africa—has been officially renamed the “Donald J. Trump Highway”, following a directive from King Mohammed VI. The decision was announced through an official communiqué, accompanied by a letter from the Moroccan monarch to the former US president, dated July 2.
The royal decree underscores Morocco’s deep appreciation for Trump’s pivotal role in recognizing the country’s sovereignty over the Western Sahara in 2020. In his correspondence, Mohammed VI emphasized that this historic move would remain etched in the collective memory of Moroccans as a testament to unwavering friendship.
Honoring a pivotal moment in diplomacy
Donald Trump’s sudden endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara in December 2020 marked a turning point in the decades-long conflict. The proposal, which envisions self-governance under Rabat’s sovereignty, was presented as part of a broader agreement involving the normalization of Morocco’s relations with Israel.
The Western Sahara, a phosphate-rich desert territory with abundant fishing waters, was under Spanish rule until 1975. While most of the region is administered by Morocco, the United Nations still classifies it as a non-self-governing territory. The dispute pits Morocco against the Polisario Front, an independence movement backed by Algeria, in a conflict that has persisted for half a century.
In a reciprocal message marking the 27th anniversary of Mohammed VI’s ascension to the throne, Trump reaffirmed his full backing for Rabat’s autonomy initiative, calling it the “only foundation for a fair and lasting solution”. The US stance dismisses alternative paths as perpetuating an unacceptable status quo.
Following the announcement, Trump took to his social media platform to express his enthusiasm, sharing his eagerness to one day drive the full length of the newly christened highway. His post read, “Thank you to His Royal Highness Mohammed VI. What an incredible honor! I can’t wait to ride this great highway in all its glory, hopefully soon!”
