After ten days of relentless travel, a team of twenty motorcyclists from the Motards du Faso concluded their ambitious Grand Tour Régional 2026 in Ouagadougou on August 11. Their journey spanned roughly 3,000 kilometers, weaving through Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria—not just for the thrill of exploration, but to champion road safety and advocate for helmet use.
This expedition, which began on August 2, was far more than a test of endurance. It was a mission to foster unity among West African riders, share cultural exchanges, and deliver humanitarian aid along the way. The group’s return to the capital was met with jubilation, marking the successful end of an adventure that tested both their skills and their resolve.
From dawn to dusk: a grueling first leg
The trip’s most grueling stretch was the inaugural leg from Ouagadougou to Accra, Ghana. Departing at 4:30 a.m., the riders arrived in the Ghanaian capital around 3:30 a.m. the following day—nearly 23 hours behind the handlebars, including brief stops. The feat underscored not only their physical stamina but also their commitment to forging connections across borders.
Abel Aziz Konaté, president of the Motards du Faso, shared the group’s vision behind the initiative: “This regional tour, which we’ve named the Grand Tour Régional 2026, builds on our long-standing tradition of solidarity with fellow riders across West Africa. It’s a way to extend our greetings to colleagues who joined us for the 72 Heures des Motards du Burkina in September 2025, an event we organized to celebrate our passion for motorcycling.”

Clad in protective helmets and jackets, the riders navigated bustling highways and serene landscapes, their gleaming machines cutting through the air. The route took them through Paga before crossing into Ghana, then onward to Togo, Benin, and Nigeria—a testament to the unifying power of two-wheeled travel.
Konaté emphasized the tour’s broader mission: “Our priority was clear—we aimed to showcase Burkina Faso’s resilience while spreading a simple but vital message: helmets save lives. We don’t need enforcement to make this happen; it should be a natural choice for every road user.”
The journey also unearthed heartwarming stories and cultural exchanges, from shared meals with local communities to impromptu gatherings with fellow riders. Each stop became an opportunity to reinforce the importance of road safety, particularly helmet compliance, aligning with the government’s ongoing safety campaigns.
