Niamey has taken center stage in a pivotal diplomatic initiative orchestrated by the United Nations. In a landmark meeting on Monday, General Abdourahamane Tiani, the Head of State of Niger, welcomed the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, Sahle-Work Zewde. The encounter marked the formal launch of a comprehensive review of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), placing Niger at the heart of this strategic assessment.
Niamey’s pivotal role in shaping UNOWAS’s future
As the first destination on Sahle-Work Zewde’s itinerary, Niger stands at the forefront of a critical UN review. The envoy, who once served as Ethiopia’s president, met with Niger’s leader to outline the scope of this evaluation. The mission seeks to evaluate how effectively UNOWAS has addressed regional challenges amid shifting political and security dynamics across West Africa and the Sahel.
The assessment will examine the office’s performance in conflict prevention, mediation, diplomatic good offices, and cooperation with regional governments. This review comes at a time when persistent security threats and political transitions demand a more adaptive and responsive approach from international institutions.
A region-wide dialogue to redefine UNOWAS’s mandate
The review extends beyond Niger’s borders, encompassing all member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Stakeholders including government officials, political parties, and civil society organizations will contribute their insights on UNOWAS’s current role and future expectations.

During her meeting with President Tiani, Sahle-Work Zewde highlighted her long-standing ties with Niger, dating back to her 1993 role as an electoral observer for the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). She acknowledged the progress witnessed in the country since then while emphasizing the need for sustained dialogue between the UN and regional governments.

Following the discussions, President Abdourahamane Tiani expressed his appreciation for the review’s objectives and affirmed Niger’s commitment to actively participate in the UNOWAS evaluation process. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including members of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP), Dr. Soumana Boubacar—Director of the President’s Cabinet and Government Spokesperson—and the Advisor for Strategic and Diplomatic Affairs.
