Pastef congress: Sonko set for another term as party leader

The Pastef party is gearing up for its upcoming congress, marked by the opening of candidate submissions for the party leadership.
According to a statement from the High Authority for Party Regulation, aspiring candidates can submit their applications from midnight on May 15, 2026, until noon on May 20, 2026. The authority clarified that standardized application forms will be made available to those seeking to lead the party.
This process aligns with the congress preparation, a pivotal moment for the ruling party’s internal organization and strategic planning.
While the election remains a formality, Ousmane Sonko, the party’s founder and dominant figure, is widely expected to be reappointed as leader during the event.
The congress comes as Pastef works to solidify its structure following its rise to power and to outline its future political priorities.
