President Bassirou Diomaye Faye urges Senegalese youth to excel for the nation ahead of Dakar 2026
With just over a year remaining until the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Dakar 2026, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has positioned the event as a transformative national project. Addressing top-performing students at the annual Concours général awards ceremony, he called on Senegal’s brightest minds to channel their talent into serving the broader public good.
The ceremony’s theme, « Senegal at the dawn of the Youth Olympic Games: rebuilding the concept of common good through Olympic values », framed his impassioned address to the nation’s academic elite.
A historic responsibility for Africa
President Faye emphasized that the YOG Dakar 2026 transcends athletics, positioning it as a milestone for Senegal and the entire continent. He described the Games as a « historic responsibility » for Africa, noting that Senegal will be the first African nation to host an Olympic event.
« Success will not be measured solely by the quality of our stadiums or opening ceremonies, » he stated, « but by the lasting legacy we leave for our youth. »
He framed the Games as a vehicle for nurturing a generation committed to excellence, respect, and friendship—core Olympic ideals he believes should shape education, citizenship, and social cohesion in Senegal.
Education as the foundation of national progress
Addressing the Concours général laureates, President Faye underscored the pivotal role of education in shaping Senegal’s future. « Today, the Republic honors you, » he declared. « Tomorrow, it will call upon you to serve. »
Beyond professional competence, he stressed the need for citizens who recognize that success is most meaningful when it uplifts the community. « We are not merely training skilled professionals, » he said, « but individuals who understand that true achievement serves the collective. »
He reaffirmed his commitment to building a Republic founded on equal opportunity, ensuring that every child—regardless of background—has the chance to thrive.

The President also paid tribute to the event’s patron, Awa Marie Coll Seck, former Minister of Health and a distinguished figure in medical research.
