Khardiata Tandian remains behind bars as Senegal’s legal system postpones its decision in a high-profile case involving the alleged falsification of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko’s signature. The Dakar Criminal Court had initially scheduled the verdict for July 9, 2026, but the presiding judge announced another adjournment, pushing the ruling to July 23.
The delay marks the second time the court has postponed its decision in this closely watched case. Authorities cited the continued absence of a key figure—Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, described as Tandian’s alleged accomplice—as the primary reason for the postponement. His presence is deemed essential before the court can finalize its ruling.
Legal maneuvering amid procedural hurdles
Tandian’s legal team seized the opportunity of the postponement to file a motion for her provisional release. The defense argued that their client had met all necessary conditions for such a measure, noting that all procedural documents had already been submitted to the court. They further contended that Tandian’s detention was no longer justified, as she had already been questioned and no risk of witness tampering existed.
The lawyer also highlighted the harshness of Tandian’s prolonged detention, which has now exceeded a year. They emphasized that the time already served could potentially cover any sentence she might receive, adding that her social and family life—she is a married mother of one—had suffered severe strain due to her incarceration.
Prosecution opposes release on grounds of public order
The public prosecutor, however, strongly opposed the defense’s request. The prosecution argued that Tandian’s release would pose a threat to public order and that she could not be guaranteed to remain available for the remainder of the trial. The court ultimately sided with the prosecution, rejecting the motion for provisional freedom.
Awaiting the next hearing
With the verdict now deferred to July 23, Tandian remains in custody as the court awaits the appearance of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy. His continued absence has stalled the judicial process, leaving the case unresolved on two fronts: the unresolved charges against Tandian and the pending testimony of her alleged accomplice.
Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, the court’s decision will finally be rendered on July 23, leaving Tandian’s fate—and her continued detention—hanging in the balance.
