Primature: handover ceremony between Ousmane Sonko and Al Aminou Lo

The official handover ceremony at the Primature became a platform for mutual appreciation between outgoing Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and his successor, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô. Their exchange highlighted a shared commitment to continuity in governance, setting the tone for a collaborative transition.

The handover ceremony took place last Friday, marking the formal transition of leadership from Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to his replacement, Ahmadou Al Aminou Lô, who has now taken the helm of government.

During the event, both leaders exchanged words of respect and gratitude, reflecting on their professional rapport built during critical phases of national policy implementation. The incoming Prime Minister recounted his initial engagement with Sonko, recalling a pivotal moment in April 2024 when he was called upon without prior acquaintance. « He reached out to me. I didn’t know him at the time. I came. He trusted me, » he shared, underscoring the foundation of their institutional partnership centered on the National Transformation Agenda.

Al Aminou Lô further detailed his involvement in executive missions, emphasizing his eventual appointment to key governmental roles. « The President decided to include me in the team implementing the National Transformation Agenda under his guidance. The outcomes have been widely recognized, » he stated. He also highlighted Sonko’s foresight in entrusting him with maintaining a vital link between the Prime Ministry and the Presidency for the agenda’s execution. « He asked me to remain the bridge between the two institutions, a role I have since fulfilled, » he explained.

Reflecting on the transition’s significance, he shared how Sonko consistently made time for consultations. « Whenever I needed to update him or seek guidance, he welcomed me with openness and support, » he noted. The handover was framed not just as a transfer of duties but as a deeply human and institutional moment. « It is an honor to perform this handover with someone who has dedicated himself to the progress of this nation, supporting me generously, » he remarked, while also acknowledging Sonko’s dignified demeanor during the proceedings.

Al Aminou Lô revealed an early warning from his predecessor regarding the challenges ahead. « He already signaled what to expect last Tuesday, telling me it would be extremely difficult, » he admitted. Despite the forewarning, he expressed his determination to uphold inter-institutional cooperation and leverage Sonko’s experience. « I will continue to benefit from his insights and seek his advice whenever necessary, » he affirmed.
