Shocking video exposes Cameroon journalist’s final moments
In Cameroon, the Martinez Zogo case reached a pivotal moment at the Yaoundé Military Tribunal this week. On June 1 and 2, judges played a video for the first time showing the final moments of the investigative journalist. The footage, which captures the harrowing final hours of Zogo’s life, has left an indelible mark on those present in the courtroom.
Courtroom in turmoil after graphic footage surfaces
The atmosphere in the Yaoundé Military Tribunal was suffocating as the video played on June 1, 2026. Martinez Zogo appears on screen, lying on the ground, his body bearing the marks of severe abuse. Bloodied and barely able to speak, he can be heard pleading for help in desperate, fragmented words. The images are unbearable, forcing the court to halt proceedings temporarily.
“Emotionally, it’s overwhelming. I don’t think I’m the only one feeling this way,” admitted defense lawyer Ludovic Sabze, echoing the sentiments of others in the room.
Digital evidence emerges in court
The next day, the trial resumed under a cloud of tension. The faces of those present remained grim, each still grappling with the impact of the footage aired the previous day. The video was recovered from the Google account of former gendarme Godje Oumarou Vincent, a former agent with Cameroon’s Directorate of External Research (DGRE).
Cybercrime expert Georges Bell Bitjoka, testifying as a prosecution witness, uncovered critical digital evidence. This included encrypted exchanges between businessman Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga and Justin Danwe between January 18 and 28—covering the period between Zogo’s abduction and the discovery of his body. The expert also noted deleted content that could not be retrieved, leaving key questions unanswered.
“This report lays all the cards on the table. It dismantles everything we’ve been told so far,” said Calvin Job, the journalist’s family lawyer. He praised the expert’s work, calling it “high-quality research with technical precision,” and added that if the tribunal relies on this report, “it will have already completed 98% of its task.”
A quest for justice remains unfinished
Despite these revelations, one question lingers: who ordered the abduction and torture of Martinez Zogo? No clear mastermind has been identified. “The expert revealed a surge in communications between Amougou Belinga and Justin Danwe during this critical period. While some data was recovered, 18% of the deleted exchanges from Amougou Belinga’s phone remain inaccessible,” explained Paul Chouta, a close associate of the journalist.
The Zogo family’s legal team has requested further analysis to examine the deleted exchanges between Justin Danwe and Jean-Pierre Amougou Belinga. This additional scrutiny could help uncover some of the lingering mysteries surrounding the case. The trial has been adjourned until June 22 and 23.
What’s next in the Martinez Zogo case?
The revelations from the video and digital evidence have intensified public scrutiny of Cameroon’s judicial system. As the trial resumes, the nation watches closely, hoping for answers—and justice—for a journalist whose final moments were marked by unspeakable brutality.
