Sonko clarifies his 2029 presidential ambitions

In a candid interview with international media, Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Pastef party and current Speaker of the National Assembly, addressed persistent speculation about his potential candidacy in the 2029 presidential election.
When pressed on whether he would run regardless of circumstances, Sonko struck a cautious tone. «It is far too early to discuss a 2029 candidacy,» he stated. «Numerous discussions have emerged regarding my possible participation, but I prefer to wait for the right moment. My party will ultimately decide its candidate, and we are not there yet.»
Regarding the potential re-election bid of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Sonko maintained a measured stance. «The president has his own path to follow, and I have mine,» he explained. «I have no intention of speculating about the sitting president’s potential candidacy. Each of us must focus on our own responsibilities.»
