Tchad mines sector boosted by local innovation and strategic vision

The Minister of Mines, Fatimé Haram Acyl, expressed her pride this week following the annual performance review and mandate recap of the SONEMIC (Société nationale d’exploitation minière et de commercialisation). Her enthusiasm centered on the strides made through homegrown solutions that are reshaping the mining landscape in Chad.

Local innovation stands out as a source of national pride. The minister highlighted a breakthrough software developed entirely by Chadian professionals. This system, already tracking 147 mining permits, integrates seamlessly with customs and tax authorities. Its implementation significantly enhances transparency and reliability in the mining sector, setting a new benchmark for regulatory efficiency.

Strategic foresight is steering the sector toward a sustainable future. Minister Acyl emphasized the launch of an ambitious mineral mapping project aimed at compiling reliable data from key provinces to prevent conflicts and inform policy decisions. In parallel, negotiations with international partners are advancing, including discussions with the United Arab Emirates on water transformation initiatives and plans for an antimony refinery. These collaborations signal a bold move toward diversifying the national economy and reducing dependency on traditional sectors.

Unified leadership and effective communication emerge as critical drivers of cohesion. The minister underscored the need for clear, consistent messaging to align stakeholders behind a shared vision. “Strong communication is essential — we must highlight our progress, align our actions, and rally behind the Head of State’s policies,” she stated. This cohesive approach is vital to positioning the mining and oil sectors as engines for job creation and sustainable development in Chad.

The annual assessment marks a pivotal moment for SONEMIC. Through local innovation, resource mapping, and international partnerships, the mining sector is poised for profound transformation. “There’s a role for everyone, and Chad will emerge stronger,” the minister concluded, urging all stakeholders to contribute actively to this collective momentum.
