Speaking at a press conference held by the Diomaye President coalition, Minister Abdourahmane Diouf weighed in on the ongoing constitutional revision debate. He firmly stated that no one will be allowed to destabilise Senegal as long as Bassirou Diomaye Faye remains at the helm. According to Diouf, the head of state has provided solid assurances since 2024 regarding the protection of institutional stability and social peace.
The minister also revisited the 2024 electoral process, pointing out that Ousmane Sonko initially advocated for a postponement of the presidential election before eventually throwing his support behind Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s campaign. Diouf now accuses the president of the National Assembly of straying from that collaborative stance. He charged Sonko with betraying the head of state and engaging in political manipulation as discussions over institutional reforms intensify.
Diouf further noted that previous presidents, despite commanding parliamentary majorities, never leveraged their power to push constitutional changes in the direction currently being proposed. Had they done so, he argued, today’s political players would not be in a position to champion the reforms they now advocate.
The minister’s remarks took a sharp tone when addressing Ousmane Sonko directly. He reminded Sonko that he once styled himself as the ‘guardian of the revolution’ — a label Diouf believes is incompatible with his current role leading the National Assembly. ‘We have no need for a pretend leader,’ Diouf said bluntly.
