Benin political landscape shifts as ld stays opposition while fcbe joins ruling side

Bénin: Les Démocrates remain firmly in opposition as FCBE aligns with government

In a decisive move, Les Démocrates (LD) has reaffirmed its opposition status during an extraordinary national council held on May 9. The gathering focused on the party’s structural challenges and future prospects, culminating in a strong declaration of continued opposition to the government.

The announcement comes shortly after the Forces Cauris pour un Bénin Émergent (FCBE), once a key opposition player, officially announced its exit from the opposition bloc following the presidential election victory of Romuald Wadagni.

LD’s unwavering opposition stance

The party’s position was outlined in a final communiqué read by Lambert De La Pierre Sodji, under the leadership of Nourénou Atchadé. The document stresses that LD has held opposition status since April 26, 2022, recorded with the Ministry of the Interior. It states, « LD solemnly reaffirms its commitment to political opposition », emphasizing the necessity of a credible and structured opposition for a thriving democracy.

The party’s leadership has pledged to engage in constructive political opposition against the new president Romuald Wadagni, while strictly adhering to the country’s constitutional framework. Their goal is to ensure checks and balances in governance, fostering a balanced political environment.

FCBE shifts allegiance after electoral setbacks

The FCBE’s decision to leave the opposition bloc follows a series of electoral setbacks. Its presidential candidate, Paul Hounkpè, secured only 5.95% of the vote in the recent election, trailing far behind the victor, Romuald Wadagni. Additionally, the party failed to win any seats in the legislative elections, prompting a strategic reevaluation.

Speaking on behalf of the FCBE, Yaya Garba, a member of the party’s leadership, acknowledged the electorate’s choice as definitive. He stated, « The people have spoken, and their decision guides our path forward ». The FCBE also extended congratulations to outgoing President Patrice Talon for his two terms and the peaceful conduct of the presidential election.

With the FCBE’s departure, Les Démocrates now stand as the primary party officially recognized as the opposition. Notably, LD did not contest the presidential race due to insufficient political endorsements under Benin’s electoral code. The timing of their announcement aligns with the country’s transition to a new executive administration following the finalization of presidential election results.
