Benin’s les démocrates party urges dialogue amidst Niger crisis

The escalating political crisis in Niger, coupled with the looming threat of military intervention from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has drawn significant concern from Benin’s opposition party, Les Démocrates. In an official press statement released on Saturday, August 5, 2023, Eric Houndété, the party’s president, emphasized that the military coup in Niger not only thrusts this neighboring nation into a precarious state but also attracts opportunistic elements seeking to exploit such instability.

Les Démocrates unequivocally stated their condemnation of any forceful seizure of power, regardless of its manifestation, expressing deep regret over the widespread resurgence of coups d’état across West Africa. The leader of the Beninese opposition further elaborated that these destabilizing events frequently emerge within political and socio-economic landscapes characterized by profound injustice, widespread curtailment of freedoms, exploitation of citizens, the monopolization of shared resources by an elite few, systematic oppression, institutional capture, the suppression of popular will, and the manipulation of both constitutional frameworks and electoral processes.

Despite these observations, Les Démocrates strongly urged ECOWAS member states to prioritize diplomacy and dialogue as the primary avenues for conflict resolution, respecting the diverse values and cultures prevalent in the region. The party also advocated for proactive prevention, emphasizing the need to vigorously and genuinely combat constitutional coups, poor governance, and exclusionary practices throughout the entire ECOWAS zone. The political group, led by Deputy Eric Houndété, also raised critical questions regarding the legal justification for declaring war on a fellow economic community member state, as well as the procedural steps the government intends to follow to secure parliamentary approval for deploying Beninese citizens in a conflict against a neighboring nation.

Furthermore, the party expressed significant concern about the financing of any potential military endeavor. Eric Houndété contended that rather than encouraging heads of state to pursue the “perilous, hazardous, and ill-advised path of force,” the Beninese government should instead champion the principles of dialogue, negotiation, reconciliation, and mutual understanding. He asserted that this approach is crucial for ensuring peace in the sister Republic of Niger and safeguarding the shared interests of both peoples and nations. Consequently, Les Démocrates reiterated its proposal for a national political dialogue within Benin, viewing it as an indispensable tool for fostering peace and development throughout the country.
