Burkina Faso: Over 1.3 Million Internally Displaced Persons Return Home

Progress in Security Situation Leads to Increased Returns

The Burkinabé government, under the presidency of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has announced that over 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their places of origin as of June 30, 2026, thanks to the progressive improvement in security situations in several reclaimed zones by national forces.

Increased Returns Across More Localities

The authorities report that these returns now concern 1,034 localities, up from 871 at the end of 2025. At this point last year, the number of IDPs who had regained their place of residence was estimated to be around 1.16 million.

Ministerial Performance Evaluation Shows Progress

The data was disclosed during the semi-annual evaluation of the Ministry of Solidarity’s performance. By mid-exercise 2026, the ministry department is showing a 46.06% execution rate of its commitments.

Assistance Provided to Vulnerable Populations

The balance also states that over 480,000 people in vulnerable situations have received assistance during the first six months of the year. Beneficiaries received food aid, essential goods, and an accompanying program aimed at supporting their recovery.

Rehabilitation Efforts Emphasized

The authorities stressed the importance of accelerating the rehabilitation work on homes in affected localities. They believe that this measure is crucial for sustaining the voluntary return of populations and enabling them to settle in durable conditions.
