Strategic mission to boost Côte d’Ivoire’s maritime sector
In a significant move to bolster its maritime potential, Côte d’Ivoire has intensified its South-South cooperation efforts. Minister of Animal and Fisheries Resources, Sidi Tiémoko Touré, recently led a high-level delegation to Mauritius and Seychelles to explore collaborative opportunities within the blue economy framework.
This diplomatic initiative aligns with the national strategy to transform marine resources into a sustainable engine for economic growth, job creation, and environmental preservation.
Forging alliances in Mauritius
The first leg of the mission took place in Mauritius, where Minister Touré engaged in productive discussions with Arvin Boolell Gosk, the Minister responsible for the Blue Economy and Fisheries. The talks centered on deepening bilateral ties in aquaculture and the responsible management of oceanic resources.
Mauritian officials expressed a strong commitment to supporting Côte d’Ivoire’s ambitions. This support is expected to manifest through knowledge sharing, specialized training programs, and the development of joint initiatives. Both nations are currently finalizing a memorandum of understanding to provide a formal structure for this partnership.
Exploring governance and innovation in Seychelles
The mission continued to Seychelles, where the Ivorian delegation delved into the complexities of maritime governance. Discussions were held with Wallace Cosgrow and other technical experts to address critical issues such as the fight against illegal fishing and the modernization of value chains within the fisheries sector.
Field visits were a key component of the visit, including tours of port facilities in Victoria, Providence, and Cascade. The delegation also visited a local hatchery and the Blue Economy Research Institute (BERI) at the University of Seychelles, highlighting the importance of scientific research in sustainable development.
A roadmap for sustainable growth
As the mission concluded, several priority areas for future cooperation were established. These include maritime governance, aquaculture development, scientific innovation, and rigorous efforts to combat illicit fishing activities. Formal protocols are expected to be signed soon to solidify these collaborative efforts.
By engaging with these Indian Ocean nations, Côte d’Ivoire reaffirms its dedication to adopting successful African models. This proactive approach to South-South cooperation aims to refine the national blue economy strategy while promoting shared expertise across the continent.
