The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded significant progress in its fight against the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak, with 19 patients declared fully recovered and discharged from treatment centers. Health authorities confirmed the milestone as part of ongoing efforts to contain the epidemic that has gripped parts of the eastern region since mid-May.
According to the latest epidemiological data from the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), a total of 550 confirmed cases have been documented across affected health zones in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Tragically, the outbreak has claimed 101 lives to date, while 309 patients remain under isolation for continuous medical care.
Ituri remains the epicenter of the outbreak
The Ituri Province continues to bear the brunt of the epidemic. Of the 25 health zones impacted, 17 are located in this province—accounting for nearly half of Ituri’s 36 total health zones. Affected areas include Aru, Aungba, Bambu, Bunia, Damas, Gety, Kilo, Komanda, and several others, underscoring the widespread nature of the crisis.
Response efforts and containment measures
Since the official declaration of the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak on May 15, robust response mechanisms have been activated. Rapid case detection, patient isolation, and contact tracing have been prioritized to curb transmission. The deployment of health teams and resources across the three affected provinces has enabled timely medical interventions, contributing to the recovery of nearly two dozen patients.
Despite this progress, health officials remain cautious. The outbreak’s persistence highlights the challenges of controlling infectious diseases in densely populated and remote regions. Continued vigilance, community engagement, and sustained funding are essential to ensure the epidemic does not resurge.
As the situation evolves, authorities are calling on citizens to remain alert, report symptoms promptly, and adhere to preventive measures such as hand hygiene and avoiding contact with suspected cases. The health ministry has assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard lives and restore normalcy in the affected areas.
