Ebola claims 2,011 lives, infects 4,381 people

The Ministry of Health has released sobering statistics showing 4,381 confirmed cases with a mortality rate of 45.9%, resulting in 2,011 deaths. The outbreak originated in Ituri Province before spreading across multiple regions including North Kivu, where conflict zones and fragile healthcare infrastructure have exacerbated the crisis. These figures now approach the devastating totals recorded during the 2018-2020 epidemic, which claimed nearly 2,300 lives.

Global health community mobilizes against Bundibugyo variant

Health experts have identified the Bundibugyo strain as the cause of this outbreak. While no vaccine has yet received formal approval for this specific variant, the World Health Organization has recommended proceeding with clinical trials for Ervebo—the only currently licensed Ebola vaccine. Available safety data suggests Phase 3 trials could commence immediately without preliminary testing. The Gavi Vaccine Alliance has committed to providing doses from the global Ervebo stockpile, which contains approximately 500,000 units. The vaccine is manufactured by Merck in the United States.

Clinical trials and international support accelerate

In addition to Ervebo, several promising vaccines are under development. Moderna has received Canadian approval to begin clinical trials for its candidate, while Oxford University and Hilleman Laboratories are advancing their own versions. The United States has pledged an additional $242 million in emergency funding to bolster the DRC’s Ebola response efforts. This comprehensive international support reflects the global community’s commitment to containing this unprecedented outbreak.
