Senegalese football legend El-Hadji Diouf has been handed a suspended one-year prison sentence by the Dakar Magistrates’ Court after failing to comply with court-ordered child support payments for his daughter. The verdict, delivered on May 12, 2026, follows a high-profile dispute that exposed financial irregularities in his obligations as a parent.
In addition to the suspended sentence, the former Senegal international was ordered to pay 10 million West African CFA francs (approximately 15,244 euros) in compensation to his ex-wife, Valérie Émilie Joséphine Leres Bishop. The damages cover unpaid child support totaling 9 million CFA francs from March 2024 to September 2025, along with 559,200 CFA francs in meal expenses for their daughter.
The legal battle traces back to July 2023, when the court finalized the couple’s divorce. At that time, the judge granted custody of their daughter to the mother while mandating Diouf to pay a monthly allowance of 500,000 CFA francs for the child’s upbringing. Despite the court’s ruling, Diouf allegedly failed to meet these financial obligations consistently.
The Senegalese football icon, who earned 60 caps and scored 18 goals for the national team, now faces the consequences of his non-compliance with family court directives. The case underscores the legal weight of child support agreements in Senegal and the repercussions for non-payment.
