FC Nantes faces closed-door Ligue 1 match following fan disturbances in Toulouse clash
The French football governing body has handed down its decision regarding the chaotic final match of the season between FC Nantes and Toulouse. The club has been penalized with a closed-door fixture for next season’s Ligue 1 campaign.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary committee delivered its verdict on Wednesday. FC Nantes will face a crucial match behind closed doors next season after supporters stormed the pitch early in the final league game of the season against Toulouse. The decision follows months of anticipation after the May 17 incident, which led to the abandonment of the match when ultras invaded the field to protest the club’s relegation to Ligue 2.
No points deducted
The official score at the time of abandonment—0-0—has been confirmed as final, with no further sanctions affecting the league standings. The disciplinary body chose not to impose additional penalties beyond the closed-door fixture.
In addition to the full stadium closure, the Loire stand—from which the disturbances originated—will remain shut for two further matches. The severity of the punishment reflects the seriousness of the incident, though the club narrowly avoided harsher measures such as point deductions for the upcoming Ligue 2 season.
While the sanctions could have been more severe, FC Nantes avoided the most damaging penalty: a points deduction that would have further complicated its return to Ligue 1. The club now turns its focus toward rebuilding and preparing for its Ligue 2 campaign under these new constraints.
