Nantes sanctioned with empty stadium after toulouse draw controversy

Nantes handed empty stadium punishment following controversial Ligue 1 clash with Toulouse

The disciplinary committee of France’s professional football league has confirmed the 0-0 score from Nantes’ final match of the season, while imposing sanctions that will see the club play their first Ligue 2 home game without spectators.

The Ligue de football professionnel (LFP) disciplinary committee has officially validated the goalless draw between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC from the final matchday of Ligue 1. However, the committee also handed down sanctions against the Canaries for the incidents that led to the match’s definitive abandonment.

The commission confirmed in an official statement that “after reviewing the investigation report, the score acquired on the field at the time of definitive match abandonment (0-0) has been permanently validated.” They further announced that Nantes would face a one-match ban behind closed doors at the Stade de la Beaujoire, along with the closure of the Loire stand for two additional fixtures.

The controversial match on May 17th was abandoned after Toulouse had already secured their Ligue 1 status for the following season, while Nantes faced certain relegation to Ligue 2. The game was halted following crowd disturbances in the Loire stand, including the discharge of smoke bombs and pitch invasions by supporters. After security forces intervened, the match was definitively abandoned “on prefectural order for safety reasons,” as stated by referee Stéphanie Frappart.

As Nantes prepare for their return to Ligue 2, their opening home fixture will be played without any spectators present in the stadium.
