Gabon has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone by being elected as a vice-president for the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. This election, which took place on June 2, 2026, marks the country’s return to the executive bureau of the UN’s primary deliberative body for the first time in nearly a decade.
A prominent return to international leadership
Alongside 21 other newly designated vice-presidents, Gabon will represent the interests of the continent. The nation joins five other African countries—Cabo Verde, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, and Zimbabwe—in this prestigious role. The one-year mandate is set to officially commence in September 2026 during the solemn opening of the 81st session.
As a representative of the African regional group, the Permanent Mission of Gabon to the UN will play a decisive role in managing the international legislative agenda. This work will be conducted in close coordination with the President-elect, Khalilur Rahman.
Strategic diplomatic and managerial functions
During this session, Gabon will undertake essential managerial and diplomatic responsibilities, including the presidency of various plenary meetings. The Gabonese representative is expected to lead several ordinary and high-level plenary sessions, ensuring the smooth progression of the assembly’s work.
Furthermore, Gabon will hold a seat on the influential General Committee of the UN. This body is tasked with organizing the agenda, planning critical votes on global resolutions, and overseeing the institution’s strategic priorities. This position allows Gabon to be at the heart of the decision-making process within the organization.
In addition to these duties, the Gabonese delegation will work in synergy with other member states to promote the priorities of the African Group. Key areas of focus will include sustainable development, climate action, and necessary administrative reforms within the UN. This diplomatic push reflects the broader vision established by the President of the Republic, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.
