Kidal under tuareg rebel control in Mali

In Mali, a recent coordinated offensive saw the Al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM and the Tuareg rebel group Front de libération de l’Azawad (FLA) overwhelm the Malian army and its Russian partners from the Africa Corps across several key towns in late April. Our reporters documented the presence of FLA members in Kidal, a city they have now reasserted control over after its recapture by government forces late last year. The fierce fighting has compelled the entire local population to evacuate. These Tuareg insurgents, now openly allied with JNIM, are actively preparing for an anticipated counter-offensive from the Malian authorities.
